Now I can move on to the small jobs to finish the restoration, then a clean and polish and it will be ready to go to it's new owner.
Well it took me 19 attempts to get the front brake sorted. 19 times removing the wheel, sanding the brake shoes, rebuilding the wheel on the bike, connecting up the cable and testing the brake. Repeat ad infinitum until brake works properly. Took it for a short ride and it's possible to lock the front wheel at will now. Good enough for me.

Several small things today. I fitted new Jota decals to the carbon sidepanels. Also received back the alternator cover that had been sent away for laser welding to cover 2 drilled holes ad a series of deep scratches. Before: After: Then I started work to optimise braking on the 750. This involved removing the brake, covering the surface of the shoes in chalk, refitting the wheel and assembling the brake and testing the braking force.
Then dismantle the wheel again, see where the chalk was scuffed and file it down. Then reassemble and test again. Repeat the process until the braking force is acceptable. The rear wheel took 12 attempts (all the above process 12 times) before I was happy with it. And I have to do the same to the front brake tomorrow. Deep joy.
Connected up the new switches today and refitted the headlamp shell.
All electrics now working properly. Next step this week will be to set up the drum brakes properly, then giving it a service and a final clean and polish. I will re-fit the front mudguard once I have finished the brakes. A little more done on the carrier on my bike today. I finalised the mounting brackets and filed them into a more rounded shape followed by final test fit. Then they came off again to be painted. Once they are dry I'll re-fit them and connect up the indicators and that will be job done. Not pretty but perfectly functional.
Today I collected some parts from the chromer. This allowed me to re-fit the handlebars and switches. I just need now to connect all the wires in the headlamp shell. I also fitted the chrome headlamp rim.
Next week I will attend to the brakes and then after some adjustments and a good clean it should be finished! Another day, another bike. This turned up today. I think I will advertise it for sale as a project for someone else to do. See my For Sale section for more details. For a change I thought I would do some work on my own bike. I have been steadily working on fitting a rack and pannier system from another bike to my own bike. Today I finished off making the extra supports required to firmly mount it to the bike and also to bring forward the rack relative to the seat as it looked too far away.
All I need to do now is make the new brackets pretty and then paint them. I finished off fitting the seat cover today. I had left the glue to dry overnight on the foam. This morning I heated the vinyl cover and stretched it into position, held in place by clips. I left it like this for half an hour to settle and then I re-tensioned the cover before gluing it into final position. Job done. I think it turned out well, considering the mess it was to start with. Then it was back to the 750 to fit the front brake light switch to the new switchgear. The thread for the switch is at an angle but the metal casting does not compensate for this so I marked it out and filed it until I got the right profile.
Ok, feeling better and more parts arrived today. I fitted the revcounter cable as I was waiting on the adaptor between inner cable and slotted exit from the casting on the cylinder head. I also fitted a new pair of passenger footpegs. Then I started reworking a seat that I have to re-cover. A previous owner had cut out the foam from half the seat in order to lower seat height and it looked terrible. I had a spare section of foam that I thought could be made to fit better before re-covering the seat.
So, I first cut off the front section, trimmed the thin foam off the rear and cut the new front and old rear sections so they fitted neatly. Then I taped the 2 sections in position and cut some new thin foam to blend the transition and also hide some of the damaged foam. I will then glue the new foam in position and let it set overnight before starting to fit the new seat cover tomorrow. Unfortunately the rubber adhesive I use had set solid in the cold so I have it warming by the fire so I can work it into the foam and seat base. Not much done in the cave these past couple of days as I am not feeling well.
I managed to do some work to the 750 this morning. The handlebars were late replacements for the ones I originally wanted to use, but they need re-chroming. The headlamp rim too. So, I removed all the equipment on the handlebars and removed them. Then I took the parts to my chromer. Ideally they will be ready at the end of the week. When they come back I will fit the new switches too and that will be one more thing completed on the bike. |
