Time to strip down the Jota engine.
Oil leak at the cam tunnel looks to have been caused (at least in part) by a broken head gasket.
Oh dear, looks like a rebore and more new pistons required.
Right, fun and games over, weather turned milder so back to work. Time to strip down the Jota engine. Oil leak at the cam tunnel looks to have been caused (at least in part) by a broken head gasket. Deeper into it I see potential reasons for oil consumption. Looks like pitting on one of the liners was not eradicated when new pistons were fitted by a previous builder of the engine. Cross-hatching is still present but did not remove the pitting. Also found heavy scuffing on the front and back faces of all 3 pistons with corresponding marking on the liners. Oh dear, looks like a rebore and more new pistons required. Instead of chasing further potential sources for the oil leak at the front of the engine around the cam tunnel I will be fitting a substitute restored head. This head looks like it may be porous at the cam tunnel area as I see voiding in the casting. I can then get this attended to at my leisure. No sign of cracks in the casting.

Got a bit more done. Took the engine ot of the Jota and started the stripdown. It's burning oil and also leaking from a damaged cylinder head. I'll chase the source of burning (likely valve guides and/or rings) and get the head welded to cure the leak. Also managed to fit new grips to my own bike. Hands were getting cramped with the old thin grips. These ones are fatter and grippier so should help alleviate the discomfort. Also selling a set of original Brevettato Jota bars. Freshly rechromed and in perfect condition.
£200 plus P&P A little more progress. Got another pair of Cerianis repainted, ready to reassemble with new seals and oil now. Then I got busy starting to strip down a Jota that has a sick engine. All the prep work done today removing all the necessary fasteners, cables, hoses etc. Should get the engine out on Sunday when I get help to lift it out. Also tried out a new pair of hand grips on my own bike. The left one was easiest to swap so I did that first. The right one needs some disassembly of switches and throttle cable mount so will do that when I get time. Very pleased with feel and softness of the left one though, Ha ha, sounds like a shit paper advert!
So, cracked on with the carb rebuild. Fitted all the new brassware, slides, gaskets, seals, needles and replated parts. Set the float heights and buttoned it all back up. Still have to sort out the choke plungers and cables but that can wait until they are fitted to the engine. Also have to fit the link tubes and 'T'.piece between the carbs. Next on the list is to finish off rebuilding the front forks and then I will have space to crack on with the engine build.
Due to terrible weather I have been doing stuff inside the house. At the moment the kitchen table has been set up as a paint booth as I have been painting shock bodies prior to reassembly of another couple of pairs of Ceriani shocks.
Until this afternoon I was waiting on a parcel of carburettor parts for the Jota. Tomorrow I will crack on getting them progressed. I think I have everything I need to finish them, will find out soon. Also got some brake pads for the freshly restored calipers too. Been doing a dozen different things recently. Managed to progress work on the Jota. Started bolting the carbs together with the cleaned and/or new parts I have available. Waiting on big list of parts before I can finish them off. Soaked some brassware in acid solution to clean them up, and also deep cleaned the carb tops that actuate the slides. Looked out all replated parts, springs, adjuster screws, back plates etc. Gathered together brake parts also, and ordered some more. Next on the agenda is to rebuild the freshly rechromed/plated/polished forks.
